G3 Joins the Team
A few weeks ago, G3 Joined Team PowerSmart. For those reading this in BC, you’ll know of BC Hydro’s Team PowerSmart initiative from their catchy TV ads. As a business aiming to reduce its overall energy consumption, we jumped at the opportunity to have a free energy audit conducted by a BC Hydro representative. The outcome of this energy audit indicated that our natural lighting and high efficiency fixtures meant we are already doing pretty well and benefitting from some of the best technology available. Of course, we also learned we still have room for improvement.
What then is the outcome of all this? By adopting the recommendations of the BC Hydro rep, we can save over $400 per year in utility costs. Sure, that isn’t a massive savings for a company the size of G3, but let’s look at it a little differently - $400 in electricity, at $0.07360 kWh equals about 5434 kWh, or about 5.4 Megawatt-hours of electricity.
Hmm, let’s see what 5.4 Megawatt-hours will get you:
- at 1000 watts for one hour (1kWh) you could run your ski waxing Iron for 5400 hours, considering it takes about 15 min of “iron time” to wax your skis, that’s over 20,000 ski waxings – that’s enough to wax every G3 office employee’s skis nearly two thousand times per season!
- the average refrigerator uses 500 kWh per year– that means that 5.4 MWh will get you almost 11YEARS of operating time – more than enough time to chill that 6 pack of your favourite beverage!
- Energy consumption for the average television runs about 200 W. That means you can watch 27,000 hours of television, or about 15,000 ski movies.
Alternately, we could always just let these extra Megawatts pass us by without using them - I’m sure our environment wouldn’t mind…
