Lorin Paley
Biography:
I realized at a young age that I was a determined outdoor enthusiast. Unlike most of my classmates I preferred the feeling of nature’s energy to television or video games. I began skiing at three years old with my family at a small ski area in New Jersey on five adventurous ski trails. After a few years of alpine racing we moved out to Steamboat Springs, Colorado where my alpine coach introduced me to Telemark skiing for cross training and balance.
Telemark skiing has always been popular in Steamboat among locals, but our new telemark program through the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club brought about 30 local kids into the sport. We quickly took our new skills onto the steeps, into the park and out of the ropes. Now, three of us race for the US National Telemark Team and will compete in Austria at the Telemark Junior World Cup Championships this season. Some of my proudest moments have been skiing into a second place overall at the US Telemark National Championships last year and a fifth place at my first Teleamark World Cup.My plans for the 08/09 season include building a biodiesel reactor as a high school project – I get my drivers license in November, skiing lots of powder in Steamboat and competing at World Cup Telemark races in Slavenia and Austria. The US Telemark Nationals will be held in Steamboat Springs later this year. It should be a busy season on and off the snow.
G3 Gear Story:
My Targa telemark bindings have been through some tough conditions. Minus 40 degree temperature, snow that resembled cement, and even freezing rain didn’t effect their performance. I drive my G3 Viva Skis pretty aggressively (that ski racing background) and depend on performance and durability.
Targa’s have never let me down. I like the flex of the X-Mountain springs for versatility. Even in bounds at Steamboat I can ski three feet of light powder and packed snow all in the same run.
