Joel Taplin's Round 1 winning Skigraphiks 2012 Design

In case you missed the news this weekend... a winner for Round 1 of G3's Skigraphiks contest has been chosen! All the entrants deserve recognition and a pat on the back for the many creative designs we saw in round 1. But one design had to rise above the rest, and sure enough Joel Taplin's 'Late Night' design earned him the win for Round 1. The graphic will be printed on the Highball Ski, G3’s fattest ski of the 2011-2012 lineup. Taplin will take home a free pair of the skis and a limited number are now available for pre-order exclusively on Backcountry.com. Skis will be delivered to Taplin and others who order them within six weeks.

The artist, Joel Taplin, was inspired to create a graphic that embodied late night camaraderie found after a good day of skiing. He used an wooden table from his childhood home near Sugarbush, Vt., to create the design.

“The table itself was made by my dad, forty or so years ago from a mahogany crate he found on the docks in New York City,” said Joel. “The Highball ski makes me think of sitting around with friends. I was drawn to the rings of glasses on the table, the evidence of a good time, and took it from there.”

Self-employed as a custom furniture and picture frame maker with a degree in industrial design from Rhode Island School of Design, Joel is no stranger to creativity. He used his design experience to get creative with the process of making the Highball topsheet.

The first round of the contest closed on September 30, but you still have three more chances to win. The second round picked up on October 1 and participants have until October 31 to submit a new design, this time for G3’s Saint ski. That limited-edition ski will be sold exclusively through MountainGear.com

There's still over two weeks left in October, so get those ideas brewing and let's see what you've got. Enter the Skigraphiks contest.
