Mounting Your G3 Skis
SKI MOUNTING
These mounting instructions have been based on our exhaustive testing. Whether mounting for alpine touring or telemark, we highly recommend that you use them to achieve the best possible performance from your G3 Skis.
Mounting positions are located ahead of traditional Chord Center to allow for the kicked-up tail. We recommend mounting fixed-heel alpine touring bindings slightly ahead of telemark bindings. The mounting sticker found on each G3 Ski has references for both mid-boot and boot-toe. Although the mid-boot method used for alpine skis and boots is the best reference point because it automatically allows for boot size, most telemark jigs refer only to the boot-toe, so we've included both. To simplify the mounting process there are boot-toe lines for different sole lengths on the mounting sticker.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTES:
- If you are mounting your G3 Skis with a telemark binding, we recommend using ONLY double-mounted shims and bindings. This G3-type system mounts the shim to the ski, then the binding to the shim.
- If your mounting jig references the center of the boot, refer to Boot-center Mounting. If the jig references the Boot-toe, refer to Boot-toe mounting.
- Because of asymmetry, the Rapid Transit and Ticket have a right and left ski. These are marked by a small foot logo on the mounting sticker.
- G3 Skis have wood cores so use waterproof wood glue for most applications. The use of epoxy will make it very difficult to remove the mounting screws.
- Peel away mounting sticker once mounting is complete.
BOOT MOUNTING
Boot-Toe Mounting
- Measure the boot sole length in centimeters. (For ski mountaineering boots, measure the sole from toe to heel. For telemark boots, measure from the middle pinhole to the heel.)
- On the mounting sticker, identify the boot-toe lines for either alpine touring or telemark. Determine the line for your boot sole length and mark it so that you can see it through your mounting jig or template's window.– E.g. When mounting for a 31cm alpine touring boot, place the jig/template's boot-toe reference on the mounting sticker's 31cm alpine touring line.– E.g. When mounting for a 31cm telemark boot, place the jig/templates "three-pin mounting line" over the mounting sticker's 31cm telemark line.
- Take your time before you drill and double-check your binding position. Measure twice, drill once!
- Use a 3.5mm ski service bit only, 9mm depth. Carefully countersink the holes.
- Do not tap.
- Shake the shavings out of the holes. Insert waterproof wood glue into the holes.
- Insert screws, paying attention to start them straight in the holes. If using a power driver, set the torque low so that you don’t strip the screws or the holes.
- Hand-tighten the screws after they are all inserted.
BOOT-CENTER MOUNTING
- If you have a jig/template that references the center-boot line (as most alpine touring jigs do) you can use this as your reference. This boot-center mounting system automatically positions the boot for size. First measure the boot sole length. (For ski mountaineering boots, measure the sole from toe to heel. For telemark boots, measure from the middle pin-hole to the heel.)
- Manipulate the jig/template to fi t the boot sole length and locate the jig/template’s center boot mark on the appropriate center boot line for alpine touring or telemark.
