Comments on Gear Performance:
Bomber on the bindings, and we had complete repair kits just in case (didn't need them); we had some problems with our original 2001 G3 skins, but Oliver was very helpful with advice and the problems were minor. My field repair (heated pot) is still going strong on them 12 months later. |
Trip Description:
Awesome. We were in a grand search for snow, which wasn't falling due to a dry year. It turns out that most of the precipitation in the Himalayas comes during the summer monsoon months, however that snow is only above 6000m so forget it unless you ski with a parachute. Spring (March-April) would be good, but we were there mid-winter and finally did get huge dumps in the Himachel Pradesh Region.
It's quite different skiing in the sub-tropics, elevation is everything and you can't help but notice that when you're riding on the top of a bus taking a turn at 60km beside a 2000' cliff. This was our first adventure to the area so we were a little bit timid, mostly looking for good turns. We found them, along with friendly locals, great huts and awesome tree skiing.
The potential for exploration in India is immense, and big mountains are the norm.
