The Lone Canadian at the Grand Targhee Big Mountain Telemark Comp

February 22-24 was The Grande Targhee Big Mountain Telemark Comp that drew tele shredders from all over the States and me, the lone Canadian. I made the last minute decision earlier that week to head south and it was well worth it! There was as bit of a hiccup at the border on Wednesday morning when I opened what I thought was my passport and saw my girlfriend Zanny’s unsmiling face. I’d say that is one time I was very unhappy to see her mug. Zanny was not on this trip, I had accidentally grabbed her passport on my way out the door that morning. A quick trip back to Vancouver and 1600 kilometers later, my buddy Dean and I arrived, blurry eyed in Grande Targhee.

It had been roughly 4 years since I competed in a telemark freeski competition and it was great to see my old buds there still ripping it up. There was also an entire entourage of new skiers raising the bar and helping to push the sport to the next level. Cloudy skies brought several inches of new snow which allowed competitors to throw down some spectacular lines making it a thoroughly entertaining event.

My first run was clean, aside from taking a small tree in the baby makers midair down a reasonably large double air, I skied it clean. Run two was not as clean but a slightly more aggressive line which landed me in third place after the first day of competition. Day two brought even cloudier skies and after a frigid hour and a half wait at the top of the venue due to weather delays, I dropped into my line. Much like run 2 of day 1, I had a slight bobble on my top air but managed to charge the rest of my line landing me in 5th place overall. I also pulled off the prestigious Big Sack award for my tree tap on day one.

The after party at the Teton Teepee was a satisfyingly sloppy end to the event. We grabbed a short night's sleep and then were on our way back to Vancouver. All in all an amazing time, can’t wait for next year!
