Giving Blood is Good For the Soul

Mark your calendars for August 3rd and the fourth annual Hookers & Grubbers Rugbyfest Fundraiser, now an Outdoor Retailer trade show staple where thirty to fifty old farts, fit women, and washed-up ruggers getting together to play a gentlemen's (and women's) match to benefit the Conservation Alliance.

Last Summer Market, 31 industry men and women, some long-time rugby veterans, others complete newbies, raised over $830 to give to the Conservation Alliance, and with your help, and perhaps a small token of your blood which we promise to replace with beer -- this is a friendly rugby match after all -- we’ll raise even more this year.

Resolutely social in nature, rugby players and the rugby curious inhabit the outdoor industry much like deer ticks inhabit tall grass. In the 4th-annual “Hookers & Grubbers” outdoor industry rugby match, seasoned (read, “grizzled”) ruggers welcome newcomers to the sport at this come-on, come-all free substitution match. All who appear can play – a $50 entry fee nets a new custom jersey, Camelbak water bottle and Aloe Up sunscreen. And, of course, a festive beer-and-food party afterwards at Legends Sports Pub.

"If you're wearing the jersey, you're playing," says Coach Tom McCarthy, "And if you don’t have a jersey, we’ll find you one. We really can't have too many substitutes. If it's over 80 degrees, none of us can last more than 10 minutes without throwing up or passing out." It is also recommended you at least start play with shorts along with the jersey – that gives us something more to tear off. Socks and shoes are also a good idea. Either way, though, half naked or not, you'll be playing as long as you have your jersey on.

To register, contact Scott Duer: – and jerseys will be available at the Aloe Up booth #132

The match will begin at 7 p.m. on Aug. 3rd, the second day of Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2011. Location of the match is more convenient than ever, at West High School, 241 North 300 West (two blocks northwest of the Radisson exit of the Salt Palace).

Sponsors include: G3 Genuine Guide Gear, Pitch Engine, Aloe Up, Outdoor Sports Insurance, Legends Sports Pub,  Camelbak, Christy Sports, Lloyd Brothers Zombie Removal, Big Sky Brewery, OutsidePR, and Recreation Law. Field equipment is being donated by University of Utah rugby team.
