An All Girls Ski Trip
This spring I was really excited to go to Alaska with a group of just girls, all telemarking. It was my first ever all girl trip, which is crazy because girls should get out and ski together more often. I guess that’s why we planned the trip really. It came about when we all met competing at the Alpine Meadows Telemark Championships –and realised that this one opportunity we had to ski together was amazing but short, and distracted by the whole competition.
The last stop on the telemark tour is the World Telemark Freeskiing Championships in Alaska – what better place is there to regroup and “posse up” for our own post competition girls ski tour extravaganza? We planned to make a trip spending some quality time doing REAL girlie things together – like driving to all the amazing mountains we could find and hiking up and skiing down – the fun way.
Of course we all had to overcome the usual burdens after the initial excitement of starting to plan a trip – like finding a plane ticket and some way to pay for it – but the dream was there so luckily it worked out (thanks for making me go Brigid).
The next obstacle was a bit more difficult to overcome: we all ended up trapped in different airports across North America for a few days, waiting for the all clear from an exploding volcano in Alaska (damn you Mt Redoubt!)– apparently planes don’t like to travel through clouds of volcanic ash so the main airport in Alaska was CLOSED.
When the ash finally settled most of us made it to the Great White North – not necessarily in time for the competition, but definitelyt in time for some amazing skiing on lots of different mountains.
With girls that love to telemark! And love hiking up mountains so that they can ski down! And love skiing down the FUN WAY! My new best friends!
Check out the article in this months issue of Telemark Skier Magazine about our trip.
And remember that if you are a girl and you love to ski, or hike, or play outdoors – there are others just as passionate as you – and its so good to spend time together because you can learn so much by hanging with the posse.
