Coldsmoke Powderfest 2012 @ Whitewater Ski Resort
G3 Genuine Guide Gear was excited to be a sponsoring partner of this year's Kootenay Coldsmoke Powder fest in Nelson, BC. This year's event was a great success, capturing and celebrating all that we love about backcountry skiing in the Kootenays. G3's Nelson based engineer Cam Shute was our man on the scene, and from his report below, we're guessing everyone had a pretty good time...
Well another Kootenay Coldsmoke Powder Fest has come and gone, and it truly lived up to it's name this year. Whitewater got pounded by a storm over the three day festival and 62cms of low density pow was dumped on participants making for an epic weekend. What made it even sweeter was that we had not expected so much snow and had just come out of a two week drought.
The event kicked off on Friday night with a "toast to the kootenays" movie night hosted by Kootenay Mountain Culture's Peter Moynes. Great films from Steve Ogle, Freeride Entertainment, Greg Hill, Bruno Long and others were enjoyed by all. A lucky winner picked up a new pair of sweet G3 Highballs which resulted in major stokage from the winner.
We awoke to a major dump on saturday, which proved to be somewhat interesting for the Randonee race competitors who got to deal with thigh deep snow on some of the descents, and soft snow to skin through throughout the new course. Andrew McNab dominated the race in the men's category, and G3 athlete Melanie Bernier wasn't far behind to bring home the win in the Women's race (although she crushed most of the men as well!).
Right after the Rando race the Valhalla Pure powder keg slopestyle competition kicked off, and wowed the crowd. Conditions were super deep and just perfect for competitors to go super large. Gabe English who's testing a pair of the new G3 Enzo R tele bindings went super huge (see below) throwing down a massive misty 7 on teles. Glad to see the binding is getting put to good use.
Saturday night's Buff-eh was exceptionally good with amazing food and dessert from Whitewater (including a chocolate fountain!), and with Mitchell Scott hosting the event everyone went home with sore ribs after plenty of laughing. My highpoint was winning the breakdance competition to take home a Cat Ski package from White Grizzly Cat Skiing in Meadow Creek. Stoked!!
The snow didn't stop, and we got even more snow on sunday to make the Poker run and the backcountry olympics super fun events. I worked at the G3 demo booth and people were having a ton of fun demoing our 12-13 line up with several popular items being our new Empire and District skis, as well as the Enzo and Enzo R tele bindings.
see you next year!
